The Mid-Autumn Festival, on the 15^th of August in lunar calendar, is one of the four traditional Chinese festivals, along with the Spring Festival, Qingming Festival and Dragon Boat Festival. Influenced by Chinese culture, Mid-Autumn Festival is also a traditional festival in some countries in East Asia and southeast Asia, especially among local Chinese. It was in the Tang Dynasty that the Mid-Autumn Festival became an official national holiday. The custom of Mid-Autumn Festival in the Tang Dynasty was popular in the north of China.

There are many theories about the origin of this Festival. The most popular one is the legend of Chang Er flying to the moon. Ten suns appeared in the sky in ancient time, scorched earth and dried river. Crops and livestock were unable to survive, people also died of hunger and thirst. Hou Yi, a hunter, shot off the redundant nine suns, saved humans and creatures. The Chinese gods of heaven gave him a medicine be immortal. He could not bear to leave his wife, Chang Er, so he did not take it and gave it to Chang Er for safekeeping. On the 15^th of August, one of Hou Yi`s disciples wanted to steal the medicine, Chang Er had to swallow it to protect the fairy medicine. Then, she ran uncontrollably to the moon. Hou Yi missed his wife, so every year on this day, he put Chang Er`s favorite food - moon cake in the garden, hoping that she will come back to reunion. It happened year after year, generation to generation, and it became a festival. Since August 15^th was considered the middle day of autumn in China, this festival was called Mid-Autumn Festival.

It is a day for family reunion. It is expected the loving family will get together on this day, taking sweet moon cakes and telling each other how much they miss them and praying for harvest and happiness. It is our precious cultural heritage.
